Who Am I Personally?

My name is Christie McDermott; I am a Christian, a mom of seven children and a grandma/nana to many, many more! My time away from being a counselor is spent playing and enjoying life with them. I love spending my life in service to family, and others; I believe it is through serving others that we truly learn to love.

How Did I Get Here Professionally?

I didn’t start out my career as a counselor; it is something that evolved over time. In 1992 I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and received my teaching certification.  I spent many years as a teacher, in both Illinois and Washington. I went into teaching because I wanted to facilitate growth and learning in my students, but soon came to the stark realization that unless their basic needs are met, educational goals will not be achieved. I saw pain and discouragement in many of my students and their families. It was with that in mind that I graduated from EWU’s Masters of Counseling program.

Being a counselor provides me the opportunity to facilitate healing of childhood wounds, not only in children and adolescents, but with their parents as well. I believe the breakdown of the family has resulted in the breakdown of society; I anticipate that if we can heal the children, adolescents, adults, and couples, the family and society will improve.

I also serve those who have a Sex  and/or  Porn  Addiction, along with the Betrayal Trauma experienced by their partner and family. Science has discovered sex and porn addictions rewire the brain; treatment can remove the rewiring and foster the development of new neural pathways which are healthy, which result in sobriety which result in healing, for both partners and the family. It's truly an honor to work with this population.
